The Nobel Prize in Literature, as one of the five Nobel Awards, is a gloriouspride for the laureate, even for the country and nation. To our pity, the Nobel Lecturehasn’t been paid high attention to by some linguists and scholars as other discourses. In recent years, some scholars have made study on Nobel Prize mainly from thefollowing perspectives, such as the causes of success of Nobel Prize Laureates inphysiology and medicine, genre analysis of Nobel Banquet Speeches, stylisticanalysis of Nobel Prize Presentation Speech, or from the perspective of internationalrelation, or the overview at a specific period. However, hardly have they involved inthe Nobel Presentation, and rarely has the charm of Nobel Lecture been referred tofrom the perspective of dialogism. On the basis of Bakhtin’s dialogism, this thesis, with Mo Yan’s Nobel Lecture in2012as the research object, makes a tentative analysis of its dialogism and reveals thehumanism permeating in the Lecture from the point of dialogism in philosophy. The thesis consists of three chapters apart from an introduction and a conclusion.Chapter One is the introduction. It falls into four parts to make a general surveyof the background of the present study, significance and innovation, questions andmethodology, as well as the content and framework of this thesis.Chapter Two centers on literature review. It is composed of a brief introductionto Bakhtin and the Bakhtin’s Circle, the attention to Bakhtin’s dialogism derivingfrom the contrast between dialogue and monologue, between dialogism andmonologism and the description of monologic dialogic discourse from such aspects asthe voice of the addresser, the voice of the addressee and the utterance markers oflatent dialogism, as well as the history development and philosophical thinking ofBakhtin’s dialogism.Chapter Three makes a thorough analysis of the dialogism in Mo Yan’s NobelLecture from two angles, macro-dialogue and micro-dialogue. The macro-dialogueincludes the dialogue between the speaker and his mother, the dialogue between thespeaker and the characters in his works, the dialogue between the speaker and other stories, the dialogue between the speaker and the audience, the counterpoint ofLecture’s structure and the unfinalizability of Lecture, while the micro-dialogueconsists of the dialogue between the speaker and the other.Chapter Four is concerned about the humanism of Mo Yan’s Nobel Lecture.Starting from the whole discourse, this chapter indicates that all stories can be takenfor the thinking of “humans”, centering on the theme of “emphasis on humanism, concern for people’s livelihood”, understanding people’s hardships, and thinkingabout the survival value and the moral wisdom, all of which are rooted in the ideologyof humanism.Chapter Five refers to the conclusion of the study, illustrating the research resultsfrom three aspects. The first part throws light upon the dialogism of the Lecture on allsides, followed by pointing out that interpreting and absorbing the essence of theLecture is in line with full understanding of the dialogism in the Lecture. The secondpart concludes the prospect of dialogism application. The last part ends up withpinpointing the main problems and limitations of this research, as well as puttingforward some suggestions for future research.
