A Study Of Translation Strategies Under The Guidance Of Bakhtin’s Dialogism

This thesis is written on the theoretical basis of Bakhtin’s dialogism.Source text Getting Together is a short story based on real historical background and contains a lot of dialogue between the two figures.Thus the thesis mainly discusses significance of dialogism to translation and the strategies chosen in the translation of Getting Together under the guidance of Bakhtin’s dialogism.The first part of the thesis is a brief introduction to the background of the study and Bakhtin’s dialogism.Although dialogism is a literary theory,it is also of great guiding significance in translation practice.The term“dialogue”in Bakhtin’s eyes is not confined to verbal dialogue between people in a narrow sense,but inclusive of the indirect dialogue such as the dialogue through texts between the author and the translator as well as the dialogue between the translator and the reader,or even the dialogue between the translator and the historical background in a broad sense.From this perspective,for want of an optimal conveyance of the meaning of the source text to the target readers,the translator needs to well handle the dialogue at every level.The second part analyzes the dialogical relationship in the story Getting Together,and discusses the possible strategies when translating,through dialogue between the translator and the author,reader and the source text itself,to achieve an optimal meaning conveyance.The last part of the thesis concludes that to maximize the meaning conveyance of the source text to the target readers requires multiaspect dialogues and an overall treatment.This part also points out that the meaning of literary work is not fixed.It varies in different people’s interpretation which is influenced by the historical environment the interpreter lives in.Thus the interpretation in itself is of historical limitations.
