Posters take a very important part in the development of arts in China. Learningthe development of posters in China is helpful to survey and learn previousexperience from the angle of history and to realize the origins and developments ofvarious posters in history from which the source of design originality and theorientation of one’s style are to be found.The theme of this thesis is the research on the development of posters after theestablishment of China. Every stage of posters’ development is studied systematicallyand comprehensively by stage.In the introduction part, the functions, features and implications of posters arepresented and the differences between posters and other types of pictures are analyzedaccording to their relationship in order to have a better understanding of thedevelopment of posters in China and to make a good preparation for subsequentresearch.In the second part, the origin and early development of poster in China arestudied. Characteristics, such as themes, contents, techniques of expression, forms,words, colors, patterns and figures, etc., are summarized before War of Resistanceagainst Aggression and during War of Liberation.In the third and fourth part, the features of posters in the preliminary stage ofEstablishment of China and Great Leap Period are researched. The themes of thisperiod mainly focus on military and construction of industry and agriculture. Workers,farmers, intellectuals and youngsters are major figures; protecting the motherland,safeguarding national unity and constructing socialism are main contents; writing orpainting realistically is the main technique and the exaggeration, transformation andsymbolization are the assistant techniques; the traditional Chinese painting, oilpainting, gouache, New Year pictures, photograph and integrated techniques are usedto compose posters; the political slogans, such as to protect the motherland or toincrease industrial and agricultural production are the main words. The posters in thisperiod present incomparable power and revolution enthusiasm.In the fifth part, the introduction of posters during the Great Cultural Revolution period is the longest part in the thesis, in which posters are divided into those in thepreliminary period, middle period and later period.Apart from inheriting previous themes of past seventeen years, the themes ofRed Guards and School Graduates are added into posters during this time. The imagesof these figures are prominent; the leaders are high and noble and impressive; theexpressions and actions of Red Guards show their anger, dignity, intension; those ofSchool Graduates show their joyful and intense fight; workers and peasants theintense fight, working and seriousness. The images of figures in posters are mainlyleaders with red sun, Red Guards with Little Red Book, School Graduates with farmtools or fields, etc.. The integral features and styles present the characteristics of“Height, Large, Entirety and Red, Light, Brightness”, formulation and Sample.After Reform and Open, the developments and types of poster art in China arediversified. Besides posters of commerce, film, culture, public welfare, art, pictureand photograph, posters of VI, composing type and individuation have beenincreasing. Titles of commercial advertising and various advertising words appear inposter art. Previous simplex color is replaced by various colors. Concreteness,abstractness, constitution and art structure of photograph are used in the poster art.The expressions of women are more natural; the styles of hair, face and clothing aremore diversified. The backgrounds of posters mainly apply multiple join of picturesand environment of daily life. Using the technique of hand-painting, photograph,combing hand-painting and photograph, and computer synthesis, the art in this periodis mainly written or painted realistically and the style of abstractness, exaggeration,deformation and symbolism are also applied.The posters of every stage are researched with plenty of background introductionin the thesis. Every chapter is discussed and studied using pictures and words toanalyze every aspect of posters and to study the development of poster art after theestablishment of China, which is helpful to understand the history of poster artdevelopment and to comprehend the reality.
