Translation Of Code-switching In Literary Works

The earliest researcher on code-switching is John Gumperz in the early1970s. Atfirst, many code-switching researches were made from the dimension of social linguistics.These studies mean to discuss the motivation, classification and functions behind thecode-switching in linguistics. In recent years, due to the reform and opening-up policy,foreign languages, especially English, have a great impact on our country’s economy,society, culture and so on. And the phenomenon of code-switching appears much morefrequently in literary works, especially in the character’s dialogue. Code-switching hasbeen researched by many scholars from different aspects as a special languagephenomenon. However, the researches on literary translation are not many.This dissertation selects Ulysses as the research object which is written by a famousIreland writer James Joyce. There are many languages in Ulysses besides the major targetlanguage English, such as French, Latin, Spanish, Germany, Italian, Hebrew, etc., whichare very difficult for Chinese readers and bring challenge for translators. The two Chineseversions both are very popular with readers, but the translation strategies chosen aredifferent. In this research four aspects which influence translation strategies are combinedwith examples in Ulysses to reflect the differences between them.Through the contrastive analysis of the two versions, there are three translationstrategies and relative examples introduced in the study of code-switching of literarytranslation, which should be based on Skopos Theory and follow the three principleswhich are skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. Translators should obey the rules,and the activity of translation has an aim. Meanwhile, it also can help the translatorproduce more and more excellent literary works for our country’s translation career, andeven the world literature.
