The case of this thesis is the simulated simultaneous interpretation of Premier Li Keqiang’s Economic Situation Report. During the process of interpretation, the author finds out that the interpretive theory has its limit. This theory was put forward by a famous French interpreter, namely Danica Seleskovitch. The core of interpretive theory is “deverbalization”. It’s quite popular and influential among interpreters. In practice, the author finds that interpretive theory cannot always provide useful guidance for interpreters. On the other hand, code-switching, which is abandoned by the influential theory developed by the Paris School, is often more useful in helping interpreters save time and energy. The author analyses both the application of interpretive operation, code-switching and the combination of interpretive operation and code-switching strategy in the process of simultaneous interpretation, and finds out that these two are mutually complementary rather than exclusive to one another. In most circumstances interpreters could choose either deverbalization or code-switching as they process the information as a whole, and more often prefer the latter one in order to save time and energy. Nowadays, China has attracted increasing attention of the world. Simultaneous interpretation will be needed even more to keep up with the contemporary needs for time saving. This thesis analyses the relativity of interpretive theory based on the simulated simultaneous interpretation of Li Keqiang’s Economic Situation Report. The conclusion is that the two modes of interpretation are up to the interpreter to choose for better performance.
