Abstract:Academic text translation refers to the translation texts of humanities and social science, which is of great significance to the international academic exchange. Since the reform and opening up policy started, our nation has introduced a large number of Western works, promoting the humanities and social science. While the quality of translation mixed, it is quite necessary to strengthen the study of the rule of academic translation, the major of translator as well as the language accomplishmentgeared to academic translation and specific translation methods. In fact, thetranslation of the works of Western humanities and social science itself is a practiceof academic study. Thus, this paper, under the guidance of relevance theory, attemptsto discuss such translation methods as annotation, conversion, amplification anddivision used in academic translation from the semantic and pragmatic level.Academic translation asks for high requirement of professional attainment and goodcommand of both English and Chinese, thus it is translators’ task to break theshackles of everyday language, find optimal relevance between foreign language andmother language, and between technical terms and ordinary language, and present thefluent translation text based on the correct understanding of the original to meet therequirements of both academic exchange and research.
