The translation material for this thesis is an excerpt from The Pragmatics of Politeness by the British linguist Geoffrey Leech, published in 2014.The author of this thesis has translated chapters 10 and 11 of the book.On the basis of the theories and methods from early researches,Leech further explained the nature of the relationship between language and politeness, which contained important theoretical significance and provided a new research perspective for domestic scholars. The source text is categorized as academic text with formal writing style and standardized expressions. At lexical level, there are a great many professional terms in the text, and nominalization structure is frequently used to increase information carrying capacity of the text.At syntactical level, passive sentences as well as long and difficult sentences are two regularly used sentence types to accentuate the objectivity and academic nature of the text. This thesis is guided by the Relevance Theory proposed by Sperber and Wilson(1986),adopting a case study research method, combining the characteristics of academic texts and analyzing them from lexical and syntactical levels. To explore the specific strategies to solve translation problems, various translation techniques are applied. The literal translation method is used to deal with the translation of terms, the conversion method is used to handle the translation of nominalized structure, the splitting method and reverse order translation method are used to manage the translation of long and difficult sentences.By means of analyzing specific cases, the author tries to summarize the translation strategies, hoping to provide some references for the translation of other academic texts.
