This thesis discusses the translation of English teaching academic text under the guidance of the Relevance Theory. So far Relevance theory has been applied to various aspects of translation and many kinds of text types, for example,advertisement,idioms,culture,puns,metaphors,coherence,back-translation,science technology, etc. However, the researches of Relevance Theory in translation are far from enough and the academic text is seldom touched upon. The translator is inspired to analyze the translation from lexical, syntactical, textual and stylistic levels.Words are analyzed from terminologies, terms with specialized meanings and polysemes.Sentences are analyzed from the shifts of passive to active, static to dynamic and evaluation-statement to statement-evaluation.The textual level is discussed from cohesion by reference, synonyms, connectives and fixed sentence structures. The stylistic features mainly focus on those in conversations which indicate the speakers' identities and the informal language use.It goes from the micro-level to macro-level guided by the Relevance Theory, attempting to apply Relevance Theory over the whole text translation. For this purpose the translator demonstrates quite a few example analysis on the all four aspects. After all these analysis, there comes the conclusion. For words, the translator has to refer to the context and evaluate possible translations and then decide which one could realize the author-intended optimal relevance. As for sentence translation, because English sentences are likely to be long and represent itself in a different logical sequences from Chinese, the translator has to analyze the logical relationship, disintegrate the sentence, adjust the word order and restructure. Both the form or structure and meaning of sentences contribute to the achievement of optimal relevance.Since the realization of textual cohesion in English and Chinese differs to some extent, the translator has to comply with the convention of the Chinese language use in the translation to help achieve the same effect as the original texts communicate. And the translator should try to imitate the stylistic features in conversations to convey the author-intended contextual effect.
