In The Republican period, Guangzhou as the birthplace of The NationalRevolution, the citizens of there, are more opened and more acceptive to new things.The film, as the new thing, is more popular in shanghai. Compared with Shanghai’sdevelopment in Guangzhou, the film’s development in Guangzhou has a big gap.That’s the original reason of this paper.Based on the collection of historical materials, and combined with some culturaltheory, this paper wants to analyze the film’s development of Guangzhou in1920sand1930s, and attempt to depict the film’s rising and the citizens cultural life of thattime.The study found that, in the republican period, the film has become the maincultural entertainment replacing the traditional opera in Guangzhou. And cinema andfilm production companies have also gained some development. But the film marketis controlled by Hollywood movies, which makes the development of local moviesdifficult. Along with that, it also brings the western consumption to thecitizens. During this period, the most characteristic types of movie Guangzhou-Cantonese film was born and has achieved rapid development, but the Nanjinggovernment took measures to ban Cantonese films, to some extent, these measureshindered the development of Cantonese film.
