In recent years, along with the development of linguistics and the expansion ofresearch scope, adverbs get more and more the attention of the researchers. Inparticular, with the introduction and development of cognitive linguistics, manyChinese researchers began to change the angle of view, study on the adverbs fromcognitive perspective. They hope to find out a prototype category from thecomplicated multiple meanings, in order to describe the evolution of the adverbs onvarious meanings and its semantic networks more systematically. This paper attemptsto research the adverb “dào” from the perspective of cognitive, which consideringsynchronic and diachronic angle. We attempt to describe the semantic network of theadverb “dào”.Chapter one is preface. We mainly introduce the research status quo of the adverb“dào”, the research content, the research significance, research methods and corpussources of this paper.Chapter two is the meanings and usages of the adverb “dào”. We mainly introducethe meanings and usages of the adverb “dào”. The meanings include:1.not the sameas general sense2.beyond one’s expectation3.not the same as the expectation4.notthe same as the fact5.express transition relation6.express climactic relation7.expressconcession8.express selective relation9.express mood.Chapter three is the evolution of different meanings, the grammaticalizationprocess and semantic network system of the adverb “dào”. According to ourinvestigation, the grammaticalization approach of the adverb “dào” is as follows: developedfrom the verb “reverse”, mainly form the meaning of “inconsistent”, correlative adverb and express different feelings. The adverb “dào” has appeared in Songdynasties, but very few use cases, increased in Yuan dynasty, the situation ofextensive use is in Ming and Qing dynasties.Chapter four is a conclusion of the whole paper. We will summarize the mainresearch results of this paper and point out the shortcomings.
