John Searle is a famous American philosopher, specialized in philosophy ofmind and philosophy of language with prominent achievements. Searle regardsphilosophy of language as the branch of philosophy of mind, because it is the mind’sexpression of the real outside world through the role of intentionality. The key pointof Searle’s philosophy of mind is that human can explain how psychological staterepresents the state of external reality through the effect of intentionality and theintentionality is one of the naturalized biological characterizations of mind. He hassystematic and thorough research on philosophy of mind. Starting from therelationship between body and heart, mind and brain, he puts forward the idea aboutintentionality of mind, and regards intentionality is the bridge between the philosophyof language and philosophy of mind.This thesis has been divided into five chapters to discuss Searle’s philosophy ofmind, especially the process from mind to language. Chapter1introduces the origin,the current research status, the exsited problems and the research purpose,significanceand method of the philosophy of mind. Chapter2introduces the basic theory ofSearle’s philosophy of mind and analyses and evaluates the two bascis theories,"default positions" and "external realism"’s main concept and core idea.Chapter3focuses on the main content of Searle’s philosophy of mind, including consciousnessregraded as the nature of mind and the inentionality regarded as the intermediary ofmind and language. This chapter analyses and explores the two core questiones,consciousness and intentionality, from the aspects of characteristics, classification andinteraction.Chapter4states language is an important characteristic of philosophy ofmind. This chapter mainly discusses the working process from mind to language inthe view of verbal behaviors, and analyzes the language’s regularity andsystematicness. Chapter5explains the modern value of Searle’s philosophy of mind.This chapter introduces the function and significance for Searl’s philosophy to themodern philosophy research from the perspectives of theory value and practice value.In theore value, Searle’s philosophy of mind is an comprehensive theory, it clarified the concept of naturalized mind in biological phenomenon; In practice value, itbrought solution to solve philosophy questiones.Innovation points of this article are: comprehensively analyses the relatedcontent of Searle’s philosopy of mind on the one hand, especially discusses thebiological phenomenon process from mind to language, and confirmes the modermvalue for Searle’s philosophy of mind on the other hand, especially its brillianteffcetion on the modern philosophy study.
