Socrates is undoubtedly one of the greatest philosophers. Xenophon described his teacher ‘a perfect gentleman’ in his Memoirs. He was noble, protector of justice, called himself a gadfly and sacrificed for the rejuvenation of Athens. Given all this, the title given by his student was deserved. However this “perfect gentleman” ended up with a death penalty given by Athenian citizens who claimed that he was ‘corrupting the young and not believing in the gods in whom the city believes’. We learn from Plato’s record that the trail was conducted in accordance to every legal procedure, so this trail was fair. Socrates on the other hand is an undisputed perfect gentleman so even Socrates is justice. This trail ultimately highlighted the theme of conflict between philosophers and poleis in Ancient Greece. Socrates’ death was the only way to make Athenian citizens to open their eyes, that his death was a sacrifice for the justice. And also to highlight that even the decision of Athenian citizens to condemn him with a death penalty is also part of justice.A variety of factors contribute to the civic values, including intelligence and mental such decisive roles, other congenital factors like educational background, social environment, as well as religious influence also show their influence. Even philosophers and citizens grew up in the same environment under the similar education, but due to a variety of congenital or acquired factors. Compared ordinary citizen with philosopher’s ideological differences, the philosopher’s ideas are more pure and always take further steps in exploring ideas. So the ordinary citizens cannot reach the depth of minds. And when philosopher try to change this reality world according to what he had learned could caused fierce collision on two different thoughts, the results may be destructive —perhaps citizens eliminated philosopher physically, or philosopher destroyed general citizens’ values, however citizens is the most main constitute part of City State, if citizens’ values were destroyed.this undoubtedly would do damage on City State, so the conflict of philosopher and city state eventually would hurt City State, philosopher and citizens, this is the core point of this topic ‘The conflict of City state and philosopher’.The conflict of philosopher and the city state has a long history. This is common in history, but as a historical event-- the death of Socrates may be the most famous one in the history of philosophy which is the most representative example. Socrates undoubtedly represent the philosopher, and the representatives of City-State are the whole Athens citizens. Eventually Socrates did not understand the political philosophy and was voted to execute by the City State, this is the city’s sorrow, but we should see this as a tragedy of this philosopher. This paper try to analysis the historical analysis of event-- the death of Socrates, to give a conclusion that maybe only mature political philosophers who use political philosophy to guide the people, can avoid the conflicts between philosophers and the city state, the political community and philosophers have reached their ‘kindness’-political community are able to live a better life, and philosophers can reach ‘the world economy’.
