| Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of Dirty Dozen(DD) and Short Dark Triad(SD3) and to explore the gender in Chinese population. DD-C was used to explore the relationship among Dark Triad, impulsivity and aggressive behavior, and to test the mediator effect of impulsivity between Dark Triad and aggressive behavior. The study also aimed at investigating the relation between Dark Triad and spontaneous Mentalization in university students.Methods: the Chinese version of Dirty Dozen(DD) and Short Dark Triad(SD3) were developed using the translation-back translation method, and were administered to a Sample of Chinese students(n = 577). The brief version of Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory(CBF-PI-B) and the Chinese version of Buss & Perry Aggression Questionnaire were also employed to collect the effective observed data. The DD-C, the Chinese version of Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, the Chinese version of Buss & Perry Aggression Questionnaire were used to investigate 413 students. 30 students which was chose from the high group and the low group of Dark Triad, were participated in the experiment about eye movement. The data Was analyzed by CFA, t-test, Pearson relation analysis, regression analysis and bootstrap.Results:(1) In this sample, the Chinese version of DD fit the data well(X2/df = 3.086, RMSEA = 0.077, NFI = 0.930, CFI = 0.951, GFI = 0.928), and the loadings of all items were higher than 0.50.(2) The Chinese version of SD3 fit not well(X2/df = 2.893, RMSEA = 0.073, NFI = 0.661, CFI = 0.746, GFI = 0.809).(3) Cronbach’ s alpha of DD and its three subscales were 0.757- 0.902, the test-retest reliability 6 weeks after were 0.725- 0.879. Based on original scale, Cronbach’ s alpha of SD3 and its three subscales were 0.484- 0.830, the test-retest reliability were 0.330- 0.784.(4) Machiavellianism and Psychopathy were positively correlated with neuroticism(p < 0.01), and negatively correlated with conscientiousness, agreeableness, openness and extraversion(p < 0.05- 0.01). Narcissism was positively correlated with neuroticism, conscientiousness, agreebleness, openness and extraversion(p < 0.01). DD and SD3 were positively correlated with the total score of aggressive behavior and its five subscales(p < 0.01).(5) Males were found to score significantly higher on Machiavellianism, Psychopathy, impulsive planning, physical aggression, verbal aggression and total score of aggressive behavior than females(p < 0.01); Females’ motor impulsiveness was significantly higher than males(p < 0.05); There were no significant gender differences in Narcissism, anger, hostility, self-aggression, cognitive impulsiveness and total score of impulsivity(p > 0.05).(6) Machiavellianism and Psychopathy were positively correlated with the total score of impulsivity(p < 0.01), and Narcissism was not correlated with impulsivity(p > 0.05).(7) The relationship between Psychopathy and anger, the relationship between Psychopathy and self-aggression, and the relationship between Narcissism and impulsivity were stronger for males than female(Fisher’z = 1.68- 1.87, p < 0.05).(8) Machiavellianism, Psychopathy and Narcissism had positive prediction effect on the aggressive behavior, they could account for 33.6% of the variance. motor impulsiveness also had positive prediction effect on the aggressive behavior, and could account for 10.6 of the variance. impulsive planning and cognitive impulsiveness could not predict aggressive behavior.(9) Partial mediating effect of motor impulsiveness between Machiavellianism and aggressive behavior was significant, and the ratio of mediating effect to total effect was 22.7%. Partial mediating effect of motor impulsiveness between Psychopathy and aggressive behavior was significant, and the ratio of mediating effect to total effect was 23.9%.(10) DD and its three subscales had no significant ralationship with spontaneous Mentalization(p > 0.05).Conclusions:(1) The Chinese version of DD shows good psychometric features except Narcissism. SD3 did not seem to function well in Chinese university students, more research will be needed to find items that represent in Chinese settings.(2) In Machiavellians or Psychopaths, the higher the level of impulsivity, the greater the possibility of generating aggressive behavior.(3) Machiavellianism has the similar behavior patterns and correlation patterns to Psychopathy, but Narcissism is different. Maybe could separate Narcissism form the “dark” traits which are characterized by callous exploitation and manipulation.(4) Person who have high level of Dark Triad have no preponderant thoughts of spontaneous mentalization. |
