On C-E Consecutive Interpreting Of Words With Chinese Characteristics

Nowadays, there are more and more exchanges between China and abroad because of China’s reform and opening-up policy and its increasing comprehensive power. There are numerous exchanges in areas such as economics, politics, culture and so on. The modes of exchange are also numerous. Among all the types of exchanges, speeches delivered by leaders play an important role. The task in this thesis is to simulate interpretation practice based on Li Keqiang’s open lecture on the economy. The speech is an important resource for other countries to learn about China’s policy and other information. That is to say, it requires that the interpreter must convey the meaning correctly. However, the differences between different cultures and languages make it very hard to convey the target language exactly like the original language in terms of language structure and ways of expressing certain meanings. With the passing of time, many words with Chinese characteristics have appeared within the language. The intended meanings of those words are quite different from their literal meanings. For interpreters, it is necessary to know both the literal meanings and intended meanings of words so as not to convey an incorrect meaning.For the interpretation of these kinds of words, the author tries to interpret them with Chinese characteristic from the perspective of Relevance Theory. According to Relevance Theory, interpretation is a verbal communication behavior associated with inference. The key of inference is to seek the optimal relevance. The interpretation of words with Chinese characteristics is an ostension-inference process. Interpreter should seek the optimal relevance from words, context and language environment and make the right judgments about how to accurately and fluently interpret the source language into the target language. The focus of this thesis is the analysis of the corpus, which is analyzed from the structure of language and words themselves. It investigates the strategies of analogy, addition, free interpreting and omission under the guidance of Relevance Theory. Many words with Chinese characteristics are selected as cases to be analyzed and summarized.
