With the opening of China’s financial markets, a lot of international financial books and materials have swarmed into China. There is therefore plenty room for translation to be done in this area. Actually, from the part of China itself, it is indeed highly necessary to learn financial knowledge and experiences from other countries, given that the financial market is in an urgent need for being both globalized and localized. Therefore, the English-Chinese translation of financial materials is both legitimate and significant to us. It is worth noting that the translation of financial terms is one of the most important factors since terms play a key role in the process of cross-lingual knowledge transfer. The shortage of the relevant discussions in this area makes this study even more necessary. In order to help financial professionals better understand financial terms and pay attention to global financial markets, this thesis focuses on the application of Skopos Theory to the translation of financial terms. Mastery of the linguistic aspect of finance points to the sound understanding the financial knowledge and the wise moves in financial investment. This thesis first presents the main content of the translation task. Then it introduces Skopos Theory and its basic rules. The analysis of the prominent features of financial English comes after, which lie in the large amount of terms, highly standardized format, complex sentences, high frequency of neology, etc. Then the paper follows up the account of the feasibility of Skopos Theory with the translation of financial terminology. Based on the three major principles of Skopos Theory and the consideration upon other translation strategies (including amplification, conversion and more) and skills (internet search, books, dictionaries, translation planning), the paper conducts a case study about the English-Chinese translation of financial terms in Complete Personal Finance Guidebook. The preliminary finding is that the tripartite rules of Skopos, inlratextual coherence and intertextual coherence could better improve the quality of target texts in the aspects of translational aim, idiomaticity and fidelity respectively. In a word, the application of Skopos Theory to the translation of financial terms makes translated versions closer to target readers, meet the requirements of target culture and improve the adequacy of financial term translation on the basis of accuracy, hence the facilitation of the dissemination of international financial knowledge and experience. It has been proved that Skopos Theory is of great guiding significance to financial terms translation. Finally, the paper makes conclusions based on this translation task, which includes the experience of the author and the deficiencies of the translation. Meanwhile, some online dictionaries and other resources are also listed for the reference of relevant professionals.
