Nowadays, English is playing a more and more important role in international communication and cooperation. In the mean time, the weight and the importance of English reading in English learning is more and more prominent. Although teachers and students devote themselves to improving reading ability, what they achieve is not what they expected. The reason is that the current English education is still influenced by traditional teaching method, is still a passive and teacher-centered method. This paper focuses on the application of the interactive teaching mode to vocational school English reading, analyzes the learning interest and autonomy of vocational students, and intends to find out an effective teaching mode to improve students’ reading proficiency.Interactive teaching mode means that student as the center of teaching; they learn and communicate with each other through the form of teacher-student and student-student interaction in the whole teaching process. Teachers’ work is to guide students learning, help them improve the autonomy in learning and cultivate their positivity and creativity. The following is the research questions:1. Is the interactive reading teaching mode more effective in arousing the students’ English reading interest than the traditional teaching method?2. Can the interactive teaching mode promote the students’ autonomy in English reading?3. Does the interactive reading teaching mode improve the students’ English reading proficiency?The research studies two vocational classes with similar English level in four months. The Control Class(CC for short) receives traditional teaching method; Experimental Class(EC for short) adopts the interactive teaching mode. During the process of the research, pre-test, post-test, questionnaires, and interview are employed and the data produced from questionnaires and tests are both analyzed and discussed by the statistical software SPSS11.5. After the data analysis and discussion, the following conclusion is drawn.1. The results of the comparison show that the interactive reading teaching mode can effectively arouse the students’ English reading interest.2. The results of the interview and questionnaires demonstrate that the interactive teaching mode can promote the students’ autonomy in English reading.3. The results of the tests indicate that the interactive reading teaching mode can increase the students’ English reading proficiency.The conclusion of the research shows it is necessary and feasible to apply the interactive teaching mode to English reading in vocational school.
