| This is an English-Chinese translation practice report. The translation project is extracted from Chapter 2 of the book, American Multiculturalism after 9/11: Transatlantic Perspectives(Excerpts),whose contents consist of Indecent Exposure: Picturing the Horror of 9/11 and “The Dead Are Our Redeemersâ€:Culture, Belief, and United 93.To complete this translation project, the translator has done a lot of work. They are: 1. Pre-translation preparation. In this part, the translator finds some important information about the book and the author and other related knowledge. 2. In-translation practice. During the translation process, the translator emphasizes the understanding of the original book and the expression of the translation. After reading the original book for general understanding, the translator consults some related books about 9/11 event and analyzes the text-type, proper nouns and some complicated sentences, etc. As the original book belongs to expressive text, the translator conducts the translation under the principles of faithfulness and accuracy. In the translating process, the key points and difficulties were marked by the translator for further thinking and estimating. In order to accomplish the translation practice well, the translator studies the Skopotheorie and some translation skills such as literal translation, conversion and parallel text. And then the translator applies these translation strategies into the case analysis so as to offer relatively appropriate solutions to the problems encountered in the translation process. 3. After-translation proofreading. After the first draft of translation, the translator goes through the translation text by comparing it with the original material. Then she puts aside the original material and reads it again from target readers’ perspective and makes a survey of the translation again under the principle of no excessive reduction or excessive addition. Finally, the translator asks her partners to check if there are logical mistakes or improper expressions and she makes relevant correction. Through this translation practice, the translator can get a deeper understanding about translation, knows how to translate the sort of text concerning history, as well as helps scholars and historians to adopt an open mind for people with 9/11 events. The conclusions based on the translating process intend to offer practical suggestions for the translation with same characters. |
