A Report On C-E Translation Of Semi-annual Report Of Shandong Confucius And Mencius Cultural Heritage Conservation Project

This translation report is based on the author’s translation practice of the Semi-annual Report of Shandong Confucius and Mencius Cultural Heritage Conservation Project entrusted by the Cultural Relics Bureau of Shandong Province. The practice was completed by three MTI students from Shandong University and the author translated more than 10,000 words. This practice is conducive to the enhancement of individual translation ability. Meanwhile, it is of great significance to the preservation of cultural heritage.Theoretical guidance is always indispensable to translation practice. Newmark’s translation theory exerts an important role in this practice. His semantic translation lays emphasis on the content and form of the original text, which calls the superiorities of word-for-word translation, literal translation and faithful translation together. Communicative translation stresses the effect of the translation, which gathers the advantages of domestication, free translation and idiomatic translation.Under the guidance of Newmark’s translation theory, the author discussed the application of semantic translation and communicative translation with specific examples from the original text and proposed a series of corresponding translation strategies. Under the guidance of semantic translation, proper nouns were transliterated in the practice. Legal terms were accurately translated into the target text. And complex sentences indicating successive relations were handled with the strategy of linear translation. Under the guidance of communicative translation, the strategy of conversion between different parts of speech was adopted to make the translated version better accepted. As for the translation of non-subject sentences largely occurring in the original text, different translation strategies were employed, including addition of subjects, nominalization, adoption of the passive voice, adoption of imperative sentences, adoption of "It" structure and adoption of "There be" structure.This practice shows that the application of semantic translation and communicative translation contributes to the accuracy and fluency of the translated version. Adopting flexible strategies under the guidance of Newmark’s translation theory works well in the translation of government documents.
