Since performing the policy of reform and opening up, China has made considerable development in college English teaching with the growth of communication with foreign countries. English teaching has brought to the attention of the society as a whole and all kinds of university cultivate a number of English talents. In order to adapt to the serious situation of enrollment expansion of colleges and universities as well as the basic national conditions in our country, the vocational college English teaching reform is imperative. In order to improve the English level of college graduates, the government put forward some basic specification for the quality of college English teaching and make a request for the practical purpose of cultivating the ability of applying language in life through the teaching process. Eventually English teaching should make students have the ability of reading, translating some professional English materials and cultivate higher applied talents in the field of technique, production, management and service. But because of the higher vocational colleges students differ greatly with ordinary university students and students’ English level is too different, English teaching in vocational colleges faces some severe problems. In recent years, the recruitment of students expands largely, but the quality of students is declining, so the improvement of the vocational college students’ comprehensive quality and standard requires higher demands on English teaching.Facing these problems, a lot of vocational colleges use explicit hierarchical teaching method when teaching English and some results have been achieved. But the shortcomings are obvious, such as some excellent students tend to be very proud while, some poor students may have lower self-esteem once hierarchical results are open. These problems are common in the English teaching in vocational colleges. It is necessary to explore the reform the existing teaching organization and use the covertly-graded English teaching model, facing all students to mobilize their initiative and enthusiasm to learn English.In order to analyze and solve these problems, this paper analyzes the problems with covertly-graded English teaching and finds some solutions from the study of the theory of the covertly-graded English teaching in vocational colleges, based on teaching practice...
