With the increasing enrollment of students at all levels of universities and colleges during the past decades, the quality of the students in our college has been lowered seriously and the gap between the students'performances has become larger and larger. All of these have brought about new problems and challenges to the teaching and education, which appear more and more obvious, especially in English teaching. Because of their different basis of study and the larger gap, it will surely make some students feel"too full"(they can not digest what has been taught) and some students feel"too hungry"(they can digest the teaching contents too fast) if teachers teach according to the same speed, the same standard and the same requirement, under which situation it is hard for the teachers to guarantee good results. Owing to the above conditions, I put forward the idea of"stratified teaching in the same classroom".Classroom teaching is a kind of traditional way of teaching. Though it has been carried on for many years, the gap between the students has always been a big problem, which is difficult to solve. Besides, after six years of study in the middle school, the discrepancy of the English level for each student has long become greater and greater. And it can not be immediately changed by temporarily learning at college. Therefore, this has been the major problem that troubles most of the college teachers. Although they have been trying their best to find a better mode of teaching to settle it, most of the colleges can not get out of the existing puzzles. It's no doubt that the gap between most of the students doesn't result from the different intelligence, but it is the non-intelligence factors , such as the different attitude towards English study , the different learning motivation , the different learning method and strategy that affect their academic records. Suppose we adopt appropriate methods, readjust our way of teaching and teach according to the actual condition of the students, the learning results of most of the students can be improved. This thesis has conducted a series of research on the overtly stratified teaching mode and the covertly stratified teaching mode in the classroom of two classes---84 students of grade 2006 at Baotou Medical College of Inner Mongolia Scientific and Technological University according to some teaching theories and the characters of the college English teaching. I have adopted the scientific methods of data analysis, questionnaire and comparative research to make a contrastive research on the results of the two kinds of stratified teaching to see which mode is better in the comprehensive improvement of college students'English study. After the research, I find that both kinds of stratified teaching modes in the classroom have some positive aspects. But the covertly stratified teaching mode in the classroom is much better in the way of students'attitude towards English, their interests in English, their capability of learning English. What's more important is that their English performances are superior to the mode of overtly stratified teaching. Why is it so? Most of the students think that the covertly stratified teaching has put more protection of the poor students'self-respect and put more emphasis on their self-confidence,thus has much better effect on the change of the poor students. Only when the poor students become better in all respects can the performances of whole class be improved. After a series of analysis and research, a conclusion has been drawn: 1) Both kinds of stratified teaching can improve their comprehensive ability of using English; 2) but comparatively speaking, covertly stratified teaching mode has got much better results in the case of largely increasing the achievements of most of the college students, and this mode of stratification has more significant meaning in college English teaching than overtly stratified teaching mode.
