There are lots of complex single syllable words in modern Chinese language, such as, “da””kou” “gao” and so on. Among them, the word “da” is considered as one of the most flexible verbs, which has the most semantic generalizations in modern Chinese language. This thesis regards “da” as the research object. It mainly analyses the semantic development of “da” and the extended relations of each sense of “da”, which can not only strengthen learners’ impression of its meanings’ connection but also strengthen their memories.This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is introduction, which mainly discusses the selected topic value and the significance of this topic research. The word “da” has the most meanings in the single syllable words in modern Chinese language, which is also one of the most serious semantic generalizations among them. The word “da” is also the important and difficult points in practical teaching. In the books “Chinese teaching course”, the word “da” appears early and often, so it’s necessary for us to make a systematical induction of the meanings of “da”. Secondly, this thesis summarizes the research results of the scholars from east dynasty to now, which provides a theoretical basis for this thesis. And then, this thesis makes an introduction to the research methods and framework. At last, the thesis puts forward the problems that needs to be solved. According to the conclusion of the meanings of the word “da” and the learner’s actual situation, this thesis puts forward some advice on the Chinese teaching.The second part is the semantic analysis of the verb “da”. This part generally sort out the meanings of “da”. We show the extended approaches and internal relations of each sense to learners, which can help them to roughly guess its meaning that they have never learned before by its extended meanings in their later Chinese communication. This will be very helpful to improve Chinese learners’ level of communication.Based on the analysis of the meanings of “da” in the second part and the HSK dynamic Composition Corpus of Beijing Language and Culture University, the third part analyzes the cause and types of errors in the process of learners studying and using “da”. The learners study Chinese as the second language. This chapter puts forward some advice on the teaching methods of the verb “da” on the basis of its error analysis. I hope that the suggestions can be useful for Chinese learners during their process of learning “da”.The main significance of this paper is it analyzes the sense and development of the verb “da” and puts forward some effective teaching methods in Chinese teaching class, which can better enable the second language learners to study and master the verb “da”, so they can use “da” flexibly and correctly in Chinese communication.
