In this thesis, the present author, summing up his exercise in translating the eleven essays from "The Economist", studies the application of various four-character phrases in translating texts of news coverage, based on Eugene A-Nida’s theory of functional equivalence. Having examined the pros and cons of the application, he argues that once used appropriately, four-character phrases in English-Chinese translations immensely enhance impressiveness in what Peter Newmark terms "communicative translation", without causing semantic deviation and cultural dislocation.
