With the trend of the globalization, China has become more closely connected with the world, and the number of foreign tourists has increased dramatically. It is predicted by the World Tourism Organization that China will become the world's largest tourist destination by 2020. High quality tourism text translation plays an important role in the development of the tourism industry and the promotion of the excellent traditional Chinese culture and the improvement of the cross-cultural communication. In tourism texts,Chinese four-character phrases are widely used to describe the natural landscapes and scenic spots of historic figures, which are closely related to the history and traditional culture in China. These four-character phrases contain many allusions and artistic conception with clear and concise expression. Thus,it is not easy to convey the exact meaning in Chinese version to foreign visitors. This report mainly focuses on the skills of the Chinese-English translation on the Chinese four-character phrases in the tourism text.This report is based on the Chinese-English ranslation practice of Traveling: Travel to China 5A-Class Tourist Attrations. And there is no English version for it at the present.This translation report is divided into three parts: the introduction, main body, and conclusion. In the introduction part, the author introduces the reason and significance of choosing the topic as well as the functional equivalence theory which guides the translation practice. The second part is the main body of the report which includes three chapters: The first chapter describes translation task. In this chapter, the translator introduces the background of the translation task, the characteristics of the Chinese four-character phrases and the characteristics of tourism English on vocabulary and syntax;The second chapter mainly describes the three stages in the process that the translator experienced during the whole translation task: preparation, translation, revision and summary in the final stage. The main tasks in the translation stage mainly include the comprehension of the meaning of the Chinese four-character phrases, diction,comprehension of the logical relationships in the source text and analysis of the sentence structure; The third chapter is case analysis. The translator summarizes some translation skills needed to apply in the process of translating the Chinese four-character phrases by referring to Nida's functional equivalence theory and the characteristics of tourism English in order to better convey the meaning. The translation skills include literal translation, free translation and the combination of the literal translation and free translation. Some specific translation examples are illustrated in this chapter.The third part is the conclusion of the report. In this part, the translator reviews the whole process of the translating practice. The translator also summarizes the experiences in the translation of Traveling: Travel to China 5A-Class Tourist Attractions and some key points which should be improved in the translator's future translation work.
