As a kind of special cultural goods, film occupies an important position in modern cultural industry. In recent years, Chinese film market booming, the figures are constantly updated. The box office is 29.6 billion in 2014 achieving the annual growth rate of 30%, ranking the world’s second largest film market and driving the growth of worldwide film market. The United States is the Kingdom of the film and its Hollywood blockbusters spread to every corner of the world with showing the American cultural and material life. Even in the limit of the film protection system, American films account for 32% of Chinese box office. Besides Ethnic Chinese, overseas audience can poorly understand our films, and we still lag behind American films significantly.In this paper, we start the comparison between them from the industry’s current status. Considering the film’s culture attribute, we make some comparative analysis with using six indexes, the box office, film circulation, penetrative radio, exportation growth superiority index, revealed comparative advantage index, trade openness. Although there are large gaps between us and America, comparative results show good prospects and development space of our country’s film industry. Based on these, with Michael Porter’s “Diamond Model” Theory, we compare Chinese and American film industry in six elements, factor conditions, demand conditions, related and supporting industries, firm strategy, structure and rivalry, and two exogenous parameters, government and chance. The international competitiveness power’s analyzing shows that we lag behind the United States in almost every aspect in addition that China has great potential space of demand conditions, which is associated with China’s film industrialization stage. Then we give a problem summary based what we’ve get from this comparative analysis.Finally, under the background of the global culture industry era’s coming, we put forward strategic decision-making for sustainable development of the film industry in China forming three aspects, nation, industry, enterprise, and supplement from the angle of international trade, combined with the experience of the American film industry’s development. Film industry in China should release from film censorship, advance the film classification reform, establish and perfect the legal protection of intellectual property rights system, perfect the legal regulation in film industry, perfect film industry investment and financing system, improve the professional talent training mechanism, establishing diversified industrial value, integrate upstream and downstream and the related industry resources, give full play to the advantages of culture, strengthen international exchanges, explore a suitable development path in the fierce competition in the world film market.
