An Analysis Of Mistranslations In Movie Subtitle Translation From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

With the development of east-west cultural communication, an increasing number of western movies and TV programs have been introduced in China. Among foreign films, Hollywood movies are especially welcomed by Chinese film fans. Thus, film subtitle translation has become a vitally important step when introducing foreign movies in order to help Chinese audiences understand and enjoy these movies. Under this circumstance, this paper will analyze the mistranslations from movie Guardians of the Galaxy based on the functional equivalence theory and discuss the influences on viewers by mistranslations. The purposes of this paper are to draw more attention from translators to subtitle translation and normalize the field of movie subtitle translation to further improve the subtitle translation system.This paper is composed of four chapters. The first chapter is an introduction, which introduces the thesis background including research background, the content and significance of the paper and the main structure of this paper. The second chapter is a literature review, which presents the functional equivalence theory and explains the relationship between this theory and subtitle translation. Chapter three analyzes the mistranslation examples from Guardians of the Galaxy and revises the mistranslations based on the functional equivalence theory. Chapter four is the conclusion of this paper, indicating the limitations of this paper.In a word, with the subtitle translation of the movie Guardians of the Galaxy as the research sample, this paper analyzes and revises the mistranslations from the perspective of functional equivalence theory. Then, this paper concludes three equivalences which are vocabulary equivalence, sentence equivalence and culture equivalence in the process of subtitle translation. The objective of this thesis is to help Chinese audiences understand foreign movies better and response as the source language audiences, hoping to give some translation experiences to the other movie subtitle translators.
