A Report On Audience-oriented Interpretation Of Guardians Of The Galaxy And Negotiating Your Job Offer

This thesis is intended to report the practice process,guiding principle and concrete strategies of interpreting two audio-visual materials of completely different text types: Guardians of the Galaxy and How to Negotiate Your Job Offer.Guardians of the Galaxy,a Marvel-produced movie featuring the superheroes,adapted from a modern comic created in 2008 and released in the U.S.in 2014.As a movie mainly for entertainment,Guardians of the Galaxy is filled with obvious comedy elements,and targeted at the youngsters who seek excitement and relaxation.How to Negotiate Your Job Offer,by contrast,as an open online course from Harvard Business School mainly for conveying practical and technical information,is a vocational educational material targeted at scholars and students who are seeking expert job-hunting advice and employment.The whole practice process of interpreting above-mentioned two materials can be divided into three stages: simultaneous interpretation in the initial stage;subsequent revision stage and consecutive interpretation in the final stage.It was found that the biggest obstacle to the simultaneous interpretation in the initial stage was that one interpreter should interpret the remarks of different movie roles alternately and continuously.The subsequent revision stage was targeted at information losses in the initial stage caused by inadequate listening comprehension.Based on the experience of previous two stages,consecutive interpretation instead of simultaneous interpretation was selected in the final stage,considering the interpreter's difficulty in multi-role play in simultaneous interpretation.On account of the above-mentioned differences in functions and in target audiences,the present writer chose Audience Orientation Principle as the guiding principle of this interpreting practice,which advocates audience-orientedness and the original author or interpreter's invisibility.Under the Guidance of Audience Orientation Principle,the present writer has adopted domestication and foreignization strategies to interpret Guardians of the Galaxy and How to negotiate your job offer respectively so as to highlight their respective entertainment function and informative function.Specifically,domestication strategy for interpreting Guardians of the Galaxy was embodied in idiomatic Chinese interpretation of alien expressions,pellucid interpretation of vague meanings,domesticated interpretation of culture-specific notions,substitution compensation for cognitive inadequacies and so on;foreignization strategy for interpreting How to negotiate your job offer was reflected in literal(and annotated)interpretation of culture-loaded words,sequential interpretation,semantic interpretation,style transplantation and the like so as to meet the diverse needs of Chinese audiences from different backgrounds.
