This is a project report on the translation of Studies of Psychology of Sex, which was written by an English psychologist and social reformer, Havelock Ellis. The excerpts translated are from Chapter 7 "Prostitution", Volumn6. This is a book of authority in the field of psychological research; the standpoints suggested by the author have greatly influenced the later researches. This project aims to translate the original text completely and faithfully, providing an opportunity for Chinese readers to learn about sex-related knowledge. It can also be taken as one of the reference books for popularizing sexual education in China.In this translation practice, the theory of functional equivalence is adopted, achieving dynamic equivalence and formal equivalence between the source text and the target text.In "Quality Control", we have discussed how to deal with terminologies, difficult words and phrases and long sentences by adopting various translation strategies and skills. The translation must be completely faithful to the source text, trying to choose words and expressions that meet Chinese reading habits. The translation skills adopted are conversion, addition and so on.In retrospection of the whole translation practice, the following implications are concluded:1.The translator should get to know which text type the source text belongs to and comprehend the text accurately and precisely.2. In order to achieve a good translation to be appreciated by the target readers, the translator should perfect himself of both the source language and target language.3. Adopting various translation strategies and skills when coming across some difficult problems.4.Improving the translator’s professional qualities through acquiring as much knowledge as possible.5.Proofreading and modification are necessary after every translation task, which is helpful in finding out problems and improving the quality of translation.
