Since the 21 st century, Chinese film industry has entered a high speed development period. Chinese film industry’s total box office increases year by year, also gradually formed its genre films. Among all the types of movies, road movie as a black horse with its excellent box office an artistic level has successfully attracted audience’s attention. By creators’ constant exploration, Chinese road movie has made many proud achievements. From “all the way” which is acknowledged China’s first road movie to now, road movie has experienced 15 years of development. Whether film producers or researchers, on the matter of cognition and understanding of road movie, remain rooted in the American road movie’s level as well as academic research. China’s road movie has some kind of inheritance relationship with the birthplace of this type – Hollywood of the United States.First chapter of this paper, briefly reviewed and collected the research related on road movie both at home and abroad. Mainly related to the research of the United States, European and Chinese road movie, from which induced the main elements of road movie, and concluded China’s new road movie works in the 21 st century. From the definition, production conditions, the development reasons, industrial foundation and other aspects discussed the basic situation of Chinese road movie, preliminary reveals its internal inevitability. Chapter Ⅲ is the focus of this research, by literature, single case studies, made text interpretation on the existing 19 road movies, especially analyzed the artistic characteristics and value of road movies. Carried out comparative study on both Chinese and American road movies, revealed the similarities and differences of road movie between the two countries under different economic and cultural background.The artistic features of Chinese road movies, mainly reflected in the stories of reality, narrative theme with all roads lead to Rome, distinctive character class design and defamiliarized space landscape. etc. Chapter Ⅳ is about Chinese road movies’ art value, mainly reflected in the spiritual symbol, symbolic metaphor and cultural sense implied in the movies and try to explore possible development trend for Chinese road movie.
