Analysis On Para-sense Group As The Translation Unit In CI

Translation unit has long been a controversial issue attracting considerable attention in the academia of Translation. As a common mode of interpreting, Consecutive Interpreting is a dynamic process of communication, featuring closeness in time and openness in space. Therefore, Translation Unit in Consecutive Interpreting possesses a more dynamic and flexible nature than that in translation. Based on the analysis of relevant studies on Translation Unit, IT Model and the Sequential Model of Translation, this paper put forward a new concept of para-sense group and conducted a study on it as the Translation Unit in CI.An empirical study was conducted. The research subjects were 19 MTI students majoring in English Interpreting. The experiment consisted of three phases: Test 1 and its questionnaire, para-sense group training and Test 2 and its questionnaire. In light of the Effort Model of CI, the results of Test 1 and its questionnaire were analyzed to explore the choice of Translation Unit in CI and its influence on interpreters’ overall performance; a comparative analysis was made between Test1 and Test 2 to explore the influence of choosing para-sense group as the Translation Unit on interpreters’ attention allocation and overall performance in CI. The paper comes to the conclusion that the selection of Translation Unit is a dynamic process running through Consecutive Interpreting and affecting interpreters’ performance. Para-sense group conforms with the flexible and dynamic nature of Translation Unit in CI. The choice of para-sense group as the Translation Unit in CI enables interpreters to better allocate their processing capacity and improve their overall performance. The findings of the research are of realistic significance to interpreting studies, interpreting teaching and interpreter training.
