Whispered interpreting is a branch of simultaneous interpreting. Whispered interpreting has been widely used in conference, interview and business negotiation. Since its specific working mode is different from the working mode of conference simultaneous interpreting. Effort model of whispered interpreting is also different from the effort model of conference simultaneous interpreting.Base on Gile’s Effort Model, interpreting tasks can be fulfilled when different efforts are coordinated well. Four efforts are concluded in his effort model: listening and analysis, production, memory and coordination. However, in whispered interpreting, another effort should be included in the model: “summary”.This paper is dedicated to figure out the effect of “summary” on whispered interpreting. And indicate whether interpreting performance is enhanced with “summary”. This paper is composed of four parts. Chapter One, theoretical framework, which concludes the theories applied in this paper. Chapter Two consists of an overview on previous study of attention allocation of simultaneous interpreting and whispered interpreting. Chapter Three is devoted to the empirical study, in which the experiment is described in detail. And the experiment results prove that with “summary” in effort model, interpreters’ performance can be enhanced. Chapter Four is implication, in which discusses implications on coping strategies, whispered interpreting quality standard and pedagogy. The thesis comes to a natural conclusion in the end which wraps up the research findings, research limitation and further study of this research.
