| Polite language is required to sustain a good interpersonal relationship of society. It is very important if people from different countries can understand each other’s cultural background and use appropriate polite language during international cultural communication. So the study of politeness between different countries becomes very important.China since ancient times is a nation of ceremonies. The polite culture is so rich and developed that there are many Chinese Polite Language. Japan, which is near China, is also a big country of etiquette. China and Japan are both in the Confucian cultural circle of east. There are many similarities in polite language and its culture of the two countries. During the cross-cultural communication, people of the two countries can understand each other well and communication well when they meet the similarities. But after all they are not the same country, neither of them has its own unique characteristics of polite language. That is why we should pay attention to this study.This thesis is divided into five parts to introduce the contrastive study on polite language of Chinese and Japanese.The first part is the literature review. In this part, I discussed the significance of the study, and then descripted the research situation related to this topic at home and abroad detailedly.I searched in China thesis platform, and found that, compared with the study of polite language contrastive between Chinese and English, the study between Chinese and Japanese is much less. So in order to have in-depth study, it is necessary to do this thesis.The second part is the introduction of polite language. This part describes the theoretical support of polite language, polite language definition, function, characteristic and forms. Among them, there are a variety of forms of polite language, which can be divided into: Thanks language, apology, honorifics and greetings.The third part is going to study the politeness under this five kinds of language forms, which is the main part of this thesis. Firstly, is the comparative study of thanks language. I introduced the cheaters of Chinese thanks language which is usually express the regard through blame words. And introduced Japanese thanks language that usually express thanks through apologize words. And then discussed the comparative study the cutler of Chinese and Japanese thanks language.Secondly, is comparative study of Chinese and Japanese apologize language. There are few words of apology expressions in Chinese, so I focuses on the “I’m sorry” and “excuse me”, and I search the reasons why there are such a rare apology expressions. That is because Chinese people pay a lot of attention on their faces. On the contrary, there are many apology expressions in Japanese which are used widely and frequently. And I also discusses the cultural reasons behind.With the concept of kindness of Japanese, they think it is polite to apologize, because his rudeness troubled others. Thirdly, is the comparative study of Chinese and Japanese honorific. Modern Chinese is divided into personal pronouns appellation, common appellation identity appellation and relative appellation. Japanese honorific is divided into respective honorific, self-depreciatory expression, Ding Ning expression beautify expression. Compared with the Chinese honorific, Japanese honorific system is more developed, the expression can be turned into polite words from vocabulary to sentence. Fourthly, is the comparative study of Chinese and Japanese greetings. Because Chinese wants to build a closely relationship among others,Chinese greeting forms are rich, flexible, and widely used.While Japanese keep a distance from outsiders.The fourth part, study the source of cultural values between China and Japan. I analyzes from the unique geographical environment to the economic mode, to look for the reasons behind the national character of Chinese and Japanese.The fifth part is the conclusion.
