A Report On The Translation Of The Economy Chapter In Memorabilia Of Wenjiang District (2002.5-2004.6)

While deepening the reform and opening up and the modernization process, Chinese local governments have attached great importance to foreign publicity. The translation task is a memorabilia which records the Wenjiang (Chengdu) District government’s dynamic information, including the functions of government organizations or agencies, all kinds of information, government documents and local profiles. It is of historical value for future reference. This report describes the complete process of the translation task. The translator is required to complete the Chapter Five of the Memorabilia in 10 days in 12,252 Chinese characters to be translated. The report selects key points and difficulties in the process of translation as the case analysis of the translation of local historical materials. Meanwhile, corresponding translation strategies and solutions are put forward to the problems in similar translation.The purpose of this translation task is to provide reference to the standardized names for government organizations and positions, and to advertise investment environment to the external world. This practical text involves extensive proper names and complex sentences, so the translator should make full preparations. The report first describes the preparation of theoretical guidance, text language analysis and task procedures. Followed by case study, the report selects typical problems encountered in the process of translation, for example, proper nouns, division and integration of sentence, amplification, omission and substitution, conversion and concrete analysis. Guided by the characteristics of these problems, appropriate solutions are proposed. Finally, the report explains the deficiencies and defects in the translation process to provide a reference value for similar type of translation.The report shows that the full preparation of pre-translation process and scientific management of procedure are the effective guarantees of translation quality and efficiency in small translation projects.In the translation process of the local historical economy, the analysis involves stylistic features, linguistic structures and cultural differences. Translation strategies and solutions are summarized in the important case studies. Suggestions and reflections on the deficiencies and problems existing in the translation are presented.
