The Analysis Of Physician Imagesin Moliere’s Comedies

Moliere(1622—1673) is an outstanding comedian of French in the seventeenth century, in his works he actively concerned about society and life, and expressed his own views for many social issues. From the early farce creation to the last show of Le Malade imaginaire,physician images appeared repeatedly in Moliere’s works, five works which remained contained reflection on medicial profession and social reality.This thesis is divided into five parts.The introduction not only tells about of Moliere’s life and works and the summary of domestic and foreign research situation about Moliere,but also points out the value and significance of the physician images of Moliere’s works.The first chapter analyses the cultural background of Moliere’s physicin writing, discussing two main aspects on literary and medicial background.The medical development of seventeenth century and before,and the medical education system of the era are discussed as medicial background.As literary background,the medical subject of Montaigne ’works which closely contacts with Moiere and Italian farce are reviewed.The second chapter studies the different physician roles combined with the text, the physicians can be classified as two categories:one is real doctors who see doctor as their occupation, they are dogma and they practice for the sake of profit,who are the author of the irony of the "ridiculous medicine"; the other characters disguised as physicians for some reason,they are not real doctors,but they eliminate patients’ mental troubles with merry ways, which is a ideal of the author with the comedy to healing spirit.The third chapter reveals the value of the physician characters.The creation of physician images reflects Moliere’s the philosophy idea and humanistic spirit, philosophy idea is mainly embodied in the feeling theory and the happiness theory;humanistic spirit is showed about the attention with value of human life and simple democratic consciousness.The conclusion summarizes the main thesis,moliere inherits the humanism tradition with doctor image;in the other hand,he exposes social ills and expesses expectations to the development of civilization expectations.
