The Study Of Chinese Learner’s Dictionary Applications On Smart Phone

This paper uses questionnaire and interview methods to study the overall situation of dictionary applications’ use and quality on smart phone. According to the lexicography problems showed in the questionnaire, we conduct a deep study about the lexicography of dictionary applications on smart phone. We choose 140 words from the Outline of the Graded Vocabulary for HSK, then choose foreign students’ favorite 3 dictionary applications (Pleco, Train Chinese and NAVER Dictionary) to study their quality from Retrieval methods, Results presentation, phonetic notation, part of speech tagging, interpretation, examples and other information. Then we study the easily confused words from examples and interpretation. Finally we provide advice to the lexicography of dictionary applications on smart phone.We found that dictionary applications are used widely and often, but teachers seldom give advice on using them. Foreign students have a low satisfaction on dictionary applications’ interpretation and examples, so the quality of these applications need to be improved. The input and result representation of dictionary applications are digitized, the capacity and information amount are also improved. They also offer pinyin and translation for examples. The part of speech tagging is not fully completed, and the phonetic notation is not standard enough. In interpretation, some of them are inaccurate and incomplete, the meanings are not properly arranged, and sometimes applications offer rare or ancient meanings. In examples, some meaning, part of speech and examples are inconsistent. Some examples can’t show students how to use the word, and some are not practical. These dictionary applications doesn’t offer enough information. The distinctiveness of confusing words are still implicit.According to the result of the study, we raised 2 suggestions for the lexicography of dictionary applications, which is to comply the standard of paper dictionaries, and fully use the advantage of the smart phone platform.
