A Humble Study On Nine Schools Explanations On Zhouyi

Nine Scholars’s Explanation on Zhouyi compiled by King of Huainan is only recorded in Treatise on Literature of the Book of Han. Wang Bo thought that those nine scholars of Huainan deteriorated the grand theory of Zhouyi. Wen Zhongzi even wrote in his article that " The theory of those nine scholars waxes thus Yi wanes" Many scholars of later generation also viewed Nine Scholars as a plague to Zhouyi which deteriorated Zhouyi. Nine School’s Explanation on Zhouyi was first recorded in Jingdianshiwen or in an even earlier time which did not match East Han Dynasty but satisfied Western Han Dynasty. I follow the theory of Song Dynasty that the author of Nine School’s Explanations to the Zhouyi was neither Jing Fang nor those who worshiped Xun Shuang. The author of the article thinks that it is Xun Shuang himself that collected and explained Nine Scholars’s Explanation on Zhouyi compiled by King of Huainan to complete Nine School’s Explanations to the Zhouyi. The objective of this article is to study the exact time Nine Scholars’s Explanation on Zhouyi compiled by King of Huainan.Nine scholars refer to those nine scholars of Huainan who enjoyed great fame in the academic circle of Zhouyi. Inherited from the Chronicle of Zuo, the method of Huti, Guabian and Shengjiagn inspired Xun Shuang. Xiangshu is the appearance of everything while Tiandao(natural law) is the inner discipline of everything. The nine scholars regard Yuanqi (primary element) as the origin of the universe, Tianming (heaven’s order) as the rule controlling everything, and view Yin and Yang as the cause of change, They also use moral to separate Yin and Yang, treat combination as the way Qian and Kun (Heaven and Earth) operates, explain the truth of heaven by Hexagrams and explain human’s maneuvers by Shengjiang. Although this book is not completed preserved, the author’s view on Yi is clear. Thus I dare to write a secularized chapter to explain opinions.Nine Scholars inherited ancient methods of Yi, like Huti, Guabian and Shengjiang.ect. They changed Confucius’s method of Yi, "Study Yi by justice and moral issues." Jiao Jing and Meng Xi inherited Confucius’s method to earn fame among Confucius scholars and get officials from the imperial court. Scholars like Yu Fan followed their examples. Scholars like Xun Shuang even worshiped Nine Scholars as their Master. That is why Xiangshu thrived while Yi declined. The Confucius method of studying Yi declined as Wang Fusi’s method got popular. So I am inclined to believe Nine Scholars deteriorated Confucius method of studying Yi and official historians made great contribution to Yi. Thus I also wrote the third chapter to study the original in this article.
