As the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers(SCAP) to oversee the occupation of Japan, General Douglas Mac Arthur had played a significant part in rebuilding Japan and instituting democratic government and had a great influence on the formulation and implementation of the US policy towards Japan from 1945 to 1951. As a word, all Mac Arthur’s words and deeds and his attitude towards post-war Japan were responsible for the shaping and prevailing of such history interpretation issues.This dissertation selects General Mac Arthur as the research objective. It analyzes such issues as the ties between Mac Arthur and historical recognition problems of Japan, the development of Mac Arthur’s view of Japan, and Mac Arthur and the formation of historical recognition problems of Japan. After that, it will probe into the significant parts that Mac Arthur had played in the formation of Historical Recognition Problems of Japan.This dissertation is divided into five parts:The first part is the introduction, including the research conditions and results of interrelated thesis among the foreign and domestic scholars, the research techniques and major innovations of this dissertation, preparing for the text.The second part describes the major embodiment and the essence of Japan historical recognition problems and uncovers the relationship between General Mac Arthur and Historical Recognition Problems of Japan historically and realistically via the analysis of Mac Arthur’s words and deeds.The third chapter summarizes the formation and development of General Macarthur’s view of Japan, indicating that it is inevitable that because of General Douglas Macarthur’s change of altitude on the nature of Japan’s war, the emperor, Tenno, escaped from trial, Tennoism was retained, and all Japan’s war crimes would not be liquidated, either.The fourth part enumerates enormous facts about how General Mac Arthur helped Emperor Hirohito escape from the punishment of war crimes, how he liquidated with Japan’s war crimes partially, how he made Tennoism retained and how he led the halfway post-war reforms in Japan. It demonstrates the great impact General Mac Arthur had on the formation of Historical Recognition Problems of Japan and the significant responsibilities he should bear on the formation of such problems.The last part summarizes the whole text and comes to the following conclusions. At first, General Mac Arthur was responsible for the shaping and prevailing of various history interpretation issues of Japan. Moreover, we should not count on the United States to help us deal with such history interpretation issues. As Historical Recognition Problems of Japan will exist for a long time, we had better rely on ourselves and cooperate with as many forces of good to take a stand for the fruits of victory of the World War against Fascism.
