Patent documents are a kind of publications making the new technology public in accordance with the law, whose format and writing method are the same and fixed, and the descriptions thereof record the technical achievements of the new inventions. Therefore, it is a very important source of technical information, and a patent document enjoys high value of use and reference especially for its relevant industry. With the development of reform and opening up in China, the amount of information is on the increase in exchange with foreign countries, and lots of advanced foreign technologies are imported; therefore, people have more opportunities to be exposed to patent documents and translators inevitably encounter some problems on patent translation. Since the patent document is a special document, carrying technical and legal information, which means that patent translation is required to be more strict than the translation of an ordinary document. As a result, the translators should not only have a solid foundation of both Chinese and English but also have a technical background in related fields.Based on her patent translation practice at Beijing RWS Science & Technology Information Consultancy Co., Ltd., the writer selected a specification of utility model patent to translate into English. The report introduces the features of patent translation and working principle of Trados and elaborates that the patent document is suitable to be translated with CAT tools; at the same time, the report provides a detailed description of the task background, the task process and the case analysis. In the part of case analysis, the writer describes the application of Trados 2014 in the translation process with specific examples. Under the guidance of Eugene A. Nida’s equivalence theory, the writer analyses the patent specification at the lexical level, the syntactical level and the discourse level. Then the writer hopes that the report may give an insight into the patent translation for the MTI students and translators who are interested in patent translation.
