The New Year painting which records folk customs is a form of Chinese traditional painting and has not only the features of general paintings, but also possesses the specialty that can not be replaced by other paintings. Due to its frank implied meanings, rich and bright colors and convenient drawing techniques, it has a long history and it is well welcomed by the public. It originated from ancient times, developed in the Han and Tang Dynasties, and finally formed in the Song Dynasty. As an important part of the history of Chinese New Year paintings, after New China was established, the development of Chinese New Year paintings received great attention by the central government, and thus, a movement of New Year painting was launched. This is a vital revolution of New Year painting works.From ancient to modern times, women have been indispensable art expressing objects. Through their appearances and expressions, not only can the formative arts and the spirit of the time for a period of time be reflected, but also the living conditions of people and social development can be observed. The world of twentieth century is full of changes.Chinese society has undergone a series of reforms. Women’ life and their images had a distinct change along with the changes. Female images in New Year paintings of this period possess modeling language and various aesthetic features which are quite special. And therefore, this article focuses on female images with four chapters: the historical environment of New China and women’ living conditions; the building of female images in New Year paintings during the period of New China; the cause of formation of female images in New Year paintings during the period of New China; and the cultural connotation of female images in New Year paintings during the period of New China. The article follows the train of thought from the perspectives of the background, figure images, the cause of formation and the revealing of cultural connotation. Through a way of researching the combination of history and images, this article explores different features of female images in different stages during the period of New China, the aesthetic ideas, development status and women’ living conditions in the period of socialist construction. It reveals the relationship between the period of New China period and women, the demands to the government from the people and the continuity and changes of traditional concepts in New China.
