The focus of this study is city writing in classical Chinese novels before the Second Opium War 1865. Based on the accumulation and summary of the huge amount of materials as well as previous studies about this paper through reading, the development of cities in Qing Dynasty in classical Chinese novels is explained in a comprehensive way. The whole appearance of cities in Qing Dynasty in classical Chinese novels is analyzed from a higher point of view.This dissertation consists of three sections, including the preface, conclusion as well as the main part which is made up of five parts. The preface tells the reasons of the study and the object of the study, discussing previous studies in a brief way. The first chapter of the body part is about different areas, probing into the outer appearance and inner relationships from still and dynamic points of view. The second chapter is about commercialism, showing the development of cities in Qing Dynasty and people’s attitudes towards commercialism base on the commercial environment in cities, commercial activities and commercial morality shown in classical Chinese novels. The third chapter is about cultural activities, analyzing the combination of elegant and vulgar cultures in different cities. The creative psychology among cities, rural areas and different groups, which is combined of the support of cultures in the novelists’ own areas and the hatred towards cultures in other areas are also explained here. The fourth chapter focuses on the construction and management of some cities which are mentioned in classical Chinese novels. These materials are entrusted with authors’ patriotism and political ideals. The last chapter is about humanity, showing the contradiction of humanity on the basis of women forced to stay at home, the vagrants, and thieves of dignity in society.
