Ordos City is an emerging ceramic production area in Inner Mongolia. By the research of this ceramic production area, the author finds that these enterprises have already developed a number of ceramic products with geographical and cultural characteristics. Though they have made certain achievements, it is not very ideal from the perspectives of product development effects and market development performance. I think the reason is mainly the lack of in-depth study and application of the geographical and cultural symbols in the product design.Targeting this problem, I determine the research objective: to find a suitable method that can apply Erdos’ s regional cultural symbols to the design of ceramic products. In the study, Ordos’ s regional cultural symbols which can be applied to the regional culture symbols are systematically sorted out and re-integrated through document consulting and field research methods. The study is conducted deeply through specific practical analysis.The application of the regional culture symbols must be combined with the design rules of ceramic products, which is mainly referred to the combination with the rules of humanized design of the product’s functions, emphasized artistic connotation, and innovative design catering to the times. Based on this, the survey is carried out through the following procedure and the specific design methods:1. To begin with the analysis of design object, and make a meticulous analysis about the product’s market positioning, application, audience groups, functional attributes, spiritual attributes, and so on. The analysis confirms that products with design elements of the regional culture symbols will have more attraction and arouse higher buying inclination of consumers.2. To determine the culture themes and select regional cultural symbols, and have a systematic sorting out and integration on regional cultural symbols applicable to t the regional culture symbols, to determine the culture themes. Starting from the design rules, choose them according to the different characteristics of the geographical and cultural symbols. The representative elements can be extracted from the the geographical and cultural symbols and be applied into the design, thus achieving the active and innovative application of the geographical and cultural symbols.3. The research should be mainly focused on the specific methods of Erdos’ s regional cultural symbols regional cultural symbols. Through the analysis on the merits and demerits of design instance, we should regard seeking the appropriate application methods as the main place of this research. In the application of the regional culture symbols, we can reach a conclusion by taking the direct reference of body and reference, the selective extraction and generation, the extraction and application of colors, and the selection and comprehensive application of materials with regional characteristics as the main methods. Besides, on the basis of paying attention to its culture type and modeling, the modern techniques and design philosophy are integrated.In the design of ceramic products, better applying the regional culture symbols into the design of ceramic products will enrich the artistic expressive force and artistic features of products, strengthen cultural taste and satisfy the consumers’ spiritual demands on regional culture; and making the product a carrier of culture will play a positive role in inheriting and developing regional culture and national culture; Not only does it enrich the product structure of the ceramic market in our district, but also increases and promotes its product reputation and market share on the market of cultural tourism, craft gifts, domestic ceramics and so on. It has certain realistic significance on the rejuvenation and development of local Ceramic Industry.
