Overlapping is one of common grammatical phenomenas in Chinese. Among them, the adjective overlapping due to its complex forms, functional diversity and rich meaning, as a more overlap has been the focus of linguistic research, especially the double syllable adjective. Due to the continuous development of the modern Chinese vocabulary, improper use of the phenomenon of two-syllable adjectives are increasing in real life and teaching of Chinese as a foreign language.How to explain why one disyllabic adjective can not overlap in our life and Chinese teaching is the main purpose of this article studies. This article has profied from the predecessors’research results of overlapping adjectives,uses the Beijing Unibersity modern Chinese corpus to examine the non-overlapping adjectives in HSK outline and has studied the mistakes the foreign student had made. The paper consists of five parts and the main elements are as follows:First in prolegomenon,the paper introduced the significance,scope and methods of this research and reviewed the related research non-overlapping adjectives.Second,the paper proposed the definition range of non-overlapping two-syllable adjectives in HSK outline.Using Quantitative Analysis Method by the Beijing Unibersity modern Chinese corpus, there are 580 non-overlapping two-syllable adjectives.Third,the paper explored the factors that affect the two-syllable adjectives can not overlap,from the four aspects of semantic, lexical structure,grammar, and pragmatics.Fourth,anylzed the special cases of non-overlapping two-syllable adjectives.The speical cases are the low-frequency words we can’t define if they can overlap.Lastly,studied the mistakes the foreign student had made in the HSK corpus of dynamic composition of Beijing Language and Culture University, and gave some suggestions.Though anylzing the factors that affect the adjectives can not overlap, this article research is for the purpose of letting the foreign stuents grasp:why it can not overlap so as to greatly reduce or completely avoid the errors.
