Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) was applied to every aspects of language teaching nowadays. Combined with the actual situation of foreign language teaching in China, many scholars and teachers of English pay more attention to reasonable implementation and application of Communicative Language Teaching approach to guide English teaching in class and they have made a lot of research in this field, but there have been relatively few studies on listening teaching in vocational colleges.CLT is an "approach that aims to make communicative competence the goal of language teaching and develop procedures for the teaching of the four language skills that acknowledge the interdependence of language and communication."(Jack C. Richards and Theodore S.) Listening is a vital skill in learning a language. It’s not only an important channel by which understandable language input can be obtained but also the first condition of verbal communication. The teaching thought "With practical give priority to, for the purpose of applying" is issued in "Basic Requirement to English Courses in Vocational Colleges" by National Educational Bureau. Therefore, listening ability and communicative competence of the students are expected to be improved with the application of CLT. In vocational colleges, the purpose of application of CLT in listening teaching is to arouse the students’interest and motivation in learning English of listening, improve their ability of listening and communicative competence.According to the theories, the features and principles of application of CLT, with the introduction of the current situation of English listening teaching in vocational colleges, the author states the measures of listening teaching with the guidance of CLT and set a teaching example of listening. Then, in the study, an experiment is made to explore the application of CLT in English listening teaching in vocational colleges. After making detailed comparison and analysis, a conclusion is made:Compared with the Audio-lingual Method, the approach of CLT can greatly arouse the students’interest and motivation of English listening learning, and it enjoys evident advantages in improving their ability of listening and communicative competence. Therefore, the CLT is worth popularizing in English listening teaching in vocational colleges.
