The phenomenon of anticipation in simultaneous interpreting is widely researched, which has been utilized as a strategy gradually. Many researchers have made efforts on itsphenomenon description, existence test, categories classification, significance evaluationand model application, while there is no more discussion of anticipation application inconsecutive interpreting, or satisfactory definition and classification of anticipation andinference. Actually, anticipation can not be dicussed without inference, that is, thecombination of the two aspects would produce high accurate target language fromanticipation, which could be accounted as a pervasive strategy in consecutive andsimultaneous interpreting. The paper of this project discusses the strategy in consecutive interpreting from fiveaspects hereof. The first part is introduction of the research summary, emphasis, difficulties and reason analysis, study method and significance of the topic. The next partreviews the empirical research relevant to inference and anticipation, and the definitionand classification of inference and anticipation in simultaneous interpreting in literature. The third part gives an overview of probability-prediction model and relevance theoryinvolved into the experimental study. The fourth part proposes hypothesis by personalinterpreting experience that anticipation and inference is a kind of macro and micro-anglestrategy applied pervasively in consecutice interpreting. Then it expounds the maincontent of anticipation and inference experiment in consecutive interpreting betweenChinese and English, including the key point of the paper, that is, the interpreting outputand data analysis course in the latter phase of the experiment. The last part makes generalconclusion to the result of whole experimental process, in which the summary commentsis also the vital part.Hence, the paper is based on the empirical study of anticipation and inference andprobability-prediction model of G.V. Chernov, with the affiliated employment of relevancetheory to conclude personal interpreting experience as theory hypothesis. Throughexperimental study, it analyzes the consecutive interpreting course of three interpreters indetails by data statistics on source language of three diverse tests. Under the analysis of different sorts of data of target language in form of diagrams, tables with relatedelaboration, it reveals all relevant aspects to anticipation and inference during consecutiveinterpreting between Chinese and English. It generates comprehensive definion andclassification to renew the nature of anticipation and inference with more experimentaltheoretical evidence and exposes the possibly existed demerit of the strategy, enlighteningsomething for interpreting teaching and reflection.
