Government Press Conference has become an important platform for diplomacy and external communication, as well as a significant means for foreign press to learn more about China’s economy, policy and culture. Through the analysis, the author found the importance of the application of Relevance Theory in the interpreting. Under the theoretical framework of Relevance Theory, the process of interpreting is a double ostensive-inferential process which involves the speaker, the interpreter and the audience. On one hand, the speaker needs to demonstrate his or her communicative intention and the interpreter should find the optimal relevance of in the utterance of the speaker and contextual assumption to infer the speaker’s true communicative intension; on the other hand, the interpreter should consider the cognitive environment of the audience to manifest the information the audience accurately in combination of appropriate interpretation strategies.Taking the interpreting of2013Premier Li’s Press Conference as an example, this paper focuses the features and challenges of the Press Conference interpreting under the guidance of Relevance Theory. The author proposes the amplification strategy to create enough contextual effect; the literal interpretation and omission strategies would help the interpreter to reduce unnecessary efforts and the liberal interpretation strategy to explain the cultural gap. At the end of the paper, the author discuses the inspirations of the interpreting of Press Conference, namely the interpreter should excel in bilingual skills, pay more attention to cross-cultural awareness and make more efforts.
