This is a translation report on domestication and foreignization in the legislative textstranslation from English into Chinese. The author has translated about150,000wordscovering various kinds of legal texts. When translating these legal texts, the author usestranslation strategies of domestication and foreignization. Domestication and foreignizationare very important translation strategies, usually discussed in the aspects of linguistics andculture. In translating the Family Law (Scotland)2006, the author discusses the choice ofdomestication and foreignization from cultural perspective. By analyzing the translation texts,the author summarizes the use of domestication and foreignization. Firstly, the author givesthe definitions of domestication and foreignization, and introduces the usage of them in legaltexts translation. Then the author analyzes the cultural phenomena of the Family Law(Scotland)2006. And in translating this legal text, the author uses domestication, whichincludes analogy, addition, and omission and so on, and foreignization, which includes literaltranslation, annotation and so forth. Finally, the author draws a conclusion on the lessonslearned in doing translation. |
