Translation is an exchange activity,the chief aim of translation is to establish valid communication between different cultures according to the communicative purpose.Laurence Venuti,a scholar in the United States,put forward domestication and foreignization in his book The Translator's Invisibility in 1995.According to Venuti's theory,the strategy of domestication is to make the translation more readable,and weaken the “foreignness” in the source text to the large extent.The domestication mainly follows the norms of the target language culture.The translation is in line with the foreign language culture,the foreign language reader is the nucleus part,and the reader's cultural background,information receiving ability and language habit are taken full account of by the translator.The foreignization aims to preserve the “foreignness” of source language culture so that the target readers can understand the source language culture.Foreignization is to lay emphasis on the style and wording of the original text.The main point of foreignization is that cultures are different,and target readers should apprehend the exotic culture.Guizhou Province is a centuries-old place,due to the impact of the geographical location and technological development,the external tourists aren't fully acquainted with the province's tourism culture.For the special geographical environment and natural resources in the western region,Guizhou Province is affluent in tourism layout,and the red tourism with the theme of the war of resistance against Japan is also the unique feature of Guizhou tourism culture.So far the study on the translation of Guizhou tourism text is limited.This thesis takes the relatively complete translation text as the research object and analyzes different functions of domestication and foreignization.The research methods of this thesis are literature search,practical study and case study.This thesis is going to answer the following questions:(1)What are the factors that have impacts upon the adoption of domestication and foreignization on tourism text translation?(2)What are the different impacts of the two strategies on the tourism text translation?(3)How are domestication and foreignization strategies applied to Guizhou tourism text translation?Domestication and foreignization is the hot topic of debate in translation circles in recent years,this thesis will make a comparison on the two strategies from the cultural communication perspective,and discuss how to find the optimal way between the two strategies.This study indicates that the factors which influence the dynamic choice of the two strategies on tourist text translation are as follows: the purpose of translation,the type of the text,the translator's subjectivity and the needs of the target language readers.The adoption of domestication can make the tourists understand the local culture of Guizhou Province at short notice and integrate into the foreign cultural environment.The adoption of foreignization strategy can make the tourists understand the unique tourism culture of Guizhou Province,so as to propagate Guizhou tourism culture.If the text describes the local distinguishing features,the adoption of foreignization will make tourists achieve a thorough understanding to the exotic features.If the cultural factors involved in the text are similar to those in the western countries,the domestication will make the translation readable for the tourists.The purpose of the tourism text is to allow tourists to learn more about the local culture and promote different cultures' intercourses.In the light of the characteristics of Guizhou tourism,foreignization can achieve the purpose of cultural communication more effectively than domestication.Guizhou's unique natural scenery and red history attract more and more overseas tourists.The tourist text translation is a crucial way for foreign tourists to understand Guizhou tourism culture.A high-quality translation can promote the local historical culture and the development of local tourism.This thesis expatiates the definitions of domestication and foreignization and their strengths and weaknesses.Both of them can achieve different purposes and obtain different effects on the translation of Guizhou tourism culture.So far,the research on Guizhou tourism text translation is limited,and the analysis of the Guizhou tourist text translation by domestication and foreignization is of great significance to the future research.
