S(?)ren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) is Danish philosopher of religion, great thinker and poet. His works constitute the basic starting point of modern Existentialism. This article bases on Kierkegaard’s personal experience and his works, traces the origin of his theory of existence. In my opinion, Kierkegaard shows the double dilemmas in our lives as an individual, and the secular dilemma is that the Christian Faith are becoming separate from the secular life, the theoretical dilemma is that the philosophy of Hegel pay no regard to that individual. Kierkegaard in his works faced the existence of that individual directly, and he discussed about the different possibilities in the life of that individual. His three spheres of life are powerful responses to the problem of the possibilities in the existence of that individual. In his view, the individual may experience aesthetic sphere, ethical sphere and religious sphere. But there are also some deficiency in every sphere. This article make an general analyze to the existence of that individual in these three spheres. The individual in every sphere has his own happiness which he is to pursue:an aesthetic person seeks for pleasure; an ethical person seeks for responsibility; an religious person seeks for passion. And I analyze these pursuits in every sphere, and I want to point out that, the individual is free to choose between different spheres of the existence, and the most fundamental characteristic of the self is that it is free. Therefore we are seeking the true happiness in different spheres of the individual, that is, we are free to have a existent choice.
