Shamu dance is a kind of Tibetan folk dance using the double sided sheep skin drums as props, which has been selected for the second national intangible cultural heritage lists. Shamu dance is spreading mainly in Zhuoni of Gansu province, where is affected by Sino-Tibatan cultures, thus the Shamu dance shows obvious regional features and deep cultural connotations. Based on literatures and autoptical results, this article will dissertate the background and present situation of Shamu dance, its artistic expression and culture characteristics, the polices of transmission and protection of the dance. It is belived that this article will be helpful to uncover entirely the essence of Shamu dance, and will be beneficial for the future development of this dance.This article is divided into introduction and four other chapters. The introduction presents the research status of Shamu dance, the target and significance of this study. In chapter one. the geographical importance of Zhuoni in the communication and activities of various nationalities is expatiated, which is critical to the formation background of Shamu dance. In chapter three, the cultural connotations of Sham is concerned. It is pointed out that the cultural characterstics of Shamu is closely related to the atmosphere of history and culture in Zhuoni. In chapter four the artistic style of Shamu dance, including its performance content, music, lyrics and movements, is analysed.Finally, in chapter five the present situation of Shamu is introduced, then two measures on its transmission and protection are suggested, which are the establishments of the Shamu museum and the special fund.
