A Report On Business English Interpretation At The Fifteenth International Fruit And Vegetable And Food Exposition

Since China joined the World Trade Organization, an increasing number of Chineseenterprises have been occupying market shares as well as establishing trade relationships withmore countries in the world. Under this circumstance, business English interpreting as themain tool of communication between countries plays an increasingly important role ininternational exchanges. Because of efficient and professional interpretation, an effectiveexchange of information can be achieved and competitive advantage for enterprises can begained, which requires interpreters to be professionally skilled. The author took an internshipfor six months in Yantai Cent Translation, Inc. The practice of business English interpretationthe author took part in was conducted when Indian delegations visiting Yantai at the FifteenthInternational Fruit and Vegetable and Food Exposition which was held on September26,2014.During the practice of business English interpretation, the author found that, as a speciallanguage communication activity, business English interpreting has its own characteristics, forinstance, words in business English are usually expressions in the form of figures. Due to thecomplexity of business English interpretation, interpreters may encounter some problemsduring the practice of business English interpretation.This report discusses problems the author came across in the actual practice of businessEnglish interpretation and concerning which the author puts forward some interpretingstrategies. Problems can be attributed to four aspects: cultural differences, business Englishvocabularies, figures and on-site reaction. Interpreting strategies are brought forth to copewith the problems as mentioned in some books of business English interpretation. The authorlearned how to deal with problems in business English interpretation with relevant strategiesthrough practice, such as the awareness of cross-culture, inquiry strategy, fuzzy strategy, andomission strategy, which is of vital importance for later study. The research of businessEnglish interpretation and interpreting strategies in the practice may also provide referencesfor interpreters.
