The thesis is intended to analyze the techniques related to simplification in Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation for lectures. On the basis of Daniel Gile’s Effort Model, the necessity of using such techniques as omission and generalization in simultaneous interpretation is confirmed.After the theoretical analysis, details of the experiment conducted for the research is presented:the objective, preparation and process of the experiment. The material chosen for the experiment is featured by the high speed of delivery and relatively loose organization. The group of subjects consists of six student interpreters. All of them are students who have been engaged in one-year Chinese to English consecutive interpretation and three-month Chinese to English simultaneous interpretation.The introduction of the experiment is followed by the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data. The qualitative analysis contains omission of rhetorical questions, parallel structures, conjunctions, demonstrative expressions, examples as well as generalization of parallel structures and detailed description.Based on the results and analysis of the experiment, it is concluded that student interpreters do use techniques of simplification often, and omission is used much more frequently than generalization; student interpreters who interpret more main information tend to use simplification-related techniques less frequently; there are problems caused by the passive use of omission and generalization.
